Mid-Week Encouragement May 26th 2024
Last Sunday's service made me think about how important it is to be a sponge rather than a brick. We should continuously seek new information from scripture to update and keep our beliefs as correct as possible, changing when necessary. We know the Word of God and God Himself are unchanging, but that's because He is perfect; we, on the other hand, are not. So, there will be many times in our lives as "growing" Christians that we update and amend our beliefs.
This in no way presents the Word of God as "shifting shadows." Instead, it exemplifies that we are growing spiritually, just as we are called to. The Word does not tell us to stand firm on "our belief" but instead on the Word of God, which we sometimes don't fully understand. This is why it is vital that we continuously enter "new" information into our understanding through diligent study of God's Word so that we can keep our beliefs updated and as correct as possible.
Acting like a brick and saying, "I stand firm on my belief, and I am unwilling to change!" is a terrible mistake. When we shut ourselves off to new input, we lack true wisdom. The wisest of men realizes that he truly knows nothing at all and will continue to seek after Him through His Word. Can you imagine going to kindergarten and learning your alphabet, then once you mastered the order of the letters, never reading a book? "I don't need to read, I already know the alphabet!"
Some do this when they learn the basics of Christianity, which is simple to understand, but stop there, never learning anything else from the rich and never-ending value of the Word of God.
1 Corinthians 3:1-3
"brothers, was not able to speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to fleshly men, as to infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food, for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are still not able, 3 for you are still fleshly."
So let us all work on reading the word, examining ourselves, and measuring everything we believe against the Word of God so that we, too, may become Spiritually Mature and continue growing in our understanding as we gain wisdom from God's Word.
